My experience as an international student at Tokyo Metropolitan University (TMU) has been a very meaningful and valuable part of my academic journey. Coming from Pakistan with a background in Microbiology and Biotechnology, studying and conducting research in Japan has given me the opportunity to develop not only academically but also personally. 

The application process was challenging but also very rewarding. As an international student, preparing the required documents, developing a research proposal, and communicating with the university and professor required careful preparation. However, the guidance and support I received during the process made it easier to understand the requirements and move forward with confidence. Being accepted into TMU was a very important achievement for me because studying in Japan had been one of my academic goals. 

Moving to Japan was a completely new experience for me. The culture, language, lifestyle, and academic environment were different from what I was used to in Pakistan. At first, adapting to these differences was challenging, but gradually I became more comfortable and learned how to manage my daily life independently. Living in Japan has also helped me become more responsible, open-minded, and respectful of different cultures and ways of life. 

My laboratory experience has been one of the most valuable parts of my time at TMU. I have had the opportunity to work on microbial research and gain practical experience in culturing microorganisms, designing experiments, monitoring growth, analyzing results, and troubleshooting experimental problems. Working in the laboratory has taught me that research is not always straightforward. Sometimes experiments do not give the expected results, and problems such as contamination or inconsistent growth require patience and careful investigation. 

Through these experiences, I have improved my experimental skills and, more importantly, developed a more scientific way of thinking. I have learned to look at unexpected results as opportunities to understand the problem rather than simply considering them failures. 

One of the biggest challenges was adapting to a new academic and cultural environment while being away from my home country. Research also brought its own challenges, especially when experiments did not work as expected. I learned to cope with these challenges by staying patient, discussing problems with my professor and laboratory members, learning from previous experiments, and improving my experimental planning. These experiences have made me more confident and independent as a researcher. 

Would I recommend TMU to prospective students? 

Yes, I would definitely recommend TMU to prospective international students. TMU provides a supportive academic environment and gives students the opportunity to gain practical research experience while living in Japan. For students who are interested in research and want to experience a different academic and cultural environment, I believe TMU can be an excellent place for graduate study. 

Overall, my experience at TMU has helped me grow as a student, researcher, and individual. I am grateful for the opportunity to study in Japan and to be part of the TMU community. I believe the knowledge, skills, and experiences I have gained here will continue to be valuable throughout my future academic and professional career.
